  • My birthday began with two awesome gifts. The first was my mamma @fenellapearson, who fed Ayla breakfast while I slept in with Cora 🙏 . It was Mamma’s last morning after ten days helping me take care of her grand babies while the hubs was traveling for @firelightcamps. We marveled at how 35 years ago @dimityps and I came out of her belly, just like my two girls. Happy Birthday Dim!!! 👯‍♀️ ❤️ The second gift was Bobby’s return this morning, without any delays despite the polar vortex. Seeing him walk in the door and watch Ayla devour him with love was the BEST gift of all. Overall, 35 was very normal. I baked my own cake because I had my heart set on a recipe (see last post). Ayla helped (she ate half the batter before I got it in the oven). I ate it in bites between wrangling kiddos. I daydreamed about next projects, I roasted a chicken for dinner and ate ALL the crispy skin because it’s maaah birthday. I wasn’t perfect. I yelled and then said sorry. I made up songs and played and played and played. I bundled up birth girls and we took a walk around the block in 11 degree Fahrenheit air and blasting sunshine. I marveled at how incredible this last year was, giving birth to #feastbyfirelight and sweet Cora Jill. I feel so lucky and grateful for my life, my family and for all of YOU. Thank you, thank you for the birthday wishes and reflecting the light ✨. 35, here we come! 💃
  • When you turn 35 and employ your kids to help bake your own cake, it better be darn EASY and damn DELICIOUS! ⠀ ⠀ This Coconut Yellow Cake from @elizabethbarbone’s book “World’s Easiest Paleo Baking” is SO good! 🍋🥥🎂⠀ ⠀ I added a lavish amount of lemon zest and topped it with homemade coconut-lemon frosting by whipping together @kitehillfoods almond yogurt, coconut cream (the cream from a can of whole fat coconut milk), honey drizzle, vanilla extract splash and more lemon zest. ⠀ ⠀ I sprinkled more lemon zest and lavender buds on top. (And of course had to use the adorable beeswax candle Ayla made at her #waldorf inspired school!)⠀ ⠀ The cake was made at 10 am in a jiffy and has since been nearly polished off by all members of our family (except baby bean), and I feel so good about feeding it to Ayla! It’s lightly sweetened with honey and that’s it. ⠀ ⠀ This is the second recipe I’ve made from this paleo cookbook, and I’m not even #paleo. I just love how all the recipes are so easy and healthy!So, with all my #konmarie clearing and organizing - during which I must have given away 30 cookbooks - I decided @elizabethbarbone’s book was a worthwhile new addition! ⠀ ⠀ Ok see ya, going to stuff my face with more cake 👋😁.
  • I’ve been thinking a lot about my relationship with social media (as I’m sure we all do!). It’s such a bittersweet relationship. I LOVE my community here (YOU!), the inspiration and engagement that feeds my soul. I also notice how much calmer my life feels without it. 🧘‍♀️ I don’t feel compelled to share everything. I don’t find my mind wandering into other people’s lives and business. I don’t compare myself to others. ⠀ ⠀ And then, I also have moments of anxiety when I’m absent, because isn’t it all ABOUT sharing and connecting around the moments that move us and bring us to our knees? Revealing tips and tricks and truths? It’s complicated. I know you know. Social media has served me immensely while also being a disservice in certain realms. ⠀ ⠀ For example, being with my children. Oh, how much sweeter and smoother and more present are our adventures without the pressure of capturing them. I saw the most spectacular wintry scene, trees dripping with snow diamonds, dazzling in the sun. Throughout the blizzard we baked cookies, made snow tea, bounded over MOUNDS of snow, curled up and read books, cooked and cooked and cooked. I had to willfully suppress the urge to share our time in the kitchen. Instead, I wrote things down. Maybe I’ll write a another cookbook! I know for now, it felt good to just let the sharing go. ⠀ ⠀ So, with all these musings, I’m gearing up for February-Free, inspired by @emmalynjane! No social media. I’ll delete the apps from my phone and refrain from perusing or posting. I want to step back and reevaluate how I can use social media to best serve me, my family and YOU.⠀ ⠀ 👂As I prepare, please ...   • Your weekday-approved pancakes are here! I’m slightly obsessed with this variation on the traditional Indian “idli”, first inspired by @sandorkraut’s book #theartoffermentation. These pancakes are made from rice and mung dal. They’re EASY, vegan, GF and powerfully, protein-y, nutritious while being gobstop delicious and filling at once! I like to make them thin and spread on ghee, drizzle honey and dust cinnamon. OR if I’m feeling decadent I make this Ashwaghanda Chocolate Fudge Sauce which is also SO good for you. (I know, wuuuuuuuut.) Ok, stop drooling and go get the recipe over on @mamayurveda’s blog (link in profile ☝️). Tag your favorite pancake partner!!! Enjoy! 🥞🍫❤️

  • GROWTH. Today, on Cora Jill Frisch’s 4-month birthday, I am so excited (and nervous) to finally share her birth story along with this maternity time lapse project with @jamielovephotography on my blog. (Link in profile ☝️)⠀ ⠀ As @jamielovephotography puts it, 9 months in 35 seconds gives a powerful glimpse into the superhuman power that is MOTHERHOOD. 🤰⠀ ⠀ And, it’s just a glimpse.⠀ ⠀ So while I know that Cora’s birth story barely captures the raw journey of my pregnancy, the bursting of my heart with her arrival, or the new depths to which our family has grown... I hope it expands on this glimpse for women, sisters, daughters, mothers and grandmothers everywhere.⠀ ⠀ Given that Cora was my second breech, #bellybirth baby, I’ve included an offering on “9 Ways to Cultivate a Joyful C-Section,” though I hope many of these will resonate for any birth scenario.⠀ ⠀ I hope my story offers comfort, wisdom, insight, and especially, truth. I thank all the mothers who have shared their stories with me and given me the courage to share mine. 🙏⠀ ⠀ Because in the end, isn’t this glimpse exactly what our journeys to motherhood - each so radically unique and transformative - are all about? Holding these precious beings in our arms and having the privilege to guide them in this world. 💖⠀ ⠀ I’d truly LOVE to hear your reflections, stories, and anything else you’d like to share about birth and motherhood.   • We celebrated the New Year with @dimityps, @nolanchace and their two boys, half siblings to my girls because Dimity and I share the same DNA 👯‍♀️! We wanted to create some kind of ritual to leave behind things that didn’t serve us in 2018, and welcome new dreams and hopes for 2019. We scribbled these on paper (we had two varieties of 🦄’s from the kids) and burned them in the fire. We made up songs with instruments and Ayla suggested we walk in circles around the fire while singing. 🔥🥁⠀ ⠀ It was pouring rain but we didn’t care, because we had hot cocoa with marshmallows and @firelightcamps cider to toast. 🍾⠀ ⠀ It was beautiful, chaotic, meaningful, silly and messy with a few fights over stray marshmallows. ⠀ ⠀ Above all, it felt wonderful to be creating new traditions with our family tribe, with the help of our kiddos. ⠀ ⠀ I’d love to hear what New Year’s traditions or rituals you have in your family! 🎊⠀ ⠀ - - - - ⠀ ⠀ (This hearthstone is real!   • The only thing Ayla wanted for her 3rd birthday was a “piggy cake with blueberries.” 🐷 Thanks to Nonna @fenellapearson, she got one! I got to do the fun part - decorating it! (And shhhh, it’s healthy too, made with protein-rich almond flour and coconut sugar.) I love you my sweet, spirited girl, beyond words. 💝 #kidsbirthdaycake #pigbirthdaycake #piggycake
