  • Your weekday-approved pancakes are here! I’m slightly obsessed with this variation on the traditional Indian “idli”, first inspired by @sandorkraut’s book #theartoffermentation. These pancakes are made from rice and mung dal. They’re EASY, vegan, GF and powerfully, protein-y, nutritious while being gobstop delicious and filling at once! I like to make them thin and spread on ghee, drizzle honey and dust cinnamon. OR if I’m feeling decadent I make this Ashwaghanda Chocolate Fudge Sauce which is also SO good for you.   • GROWTH. Today, on Cora Jill Frisch’s 4-month birthday, I am so excited (and nervous) to finally share her birth story along with this maternity time lapse project with @jamielovephotography on my blog. (Link in profile ☝️)⠀ ⠀ As @jamielovephotography puts it, 9 months in 35 seconds gives a powerful glimpse into the superhuman power that is MOTHERHOOD. 🤰⠀ ⠀ And, it’s just a glimpse.⠀ ⠀ So while I know that Cora’s birth story barely captures the raw journey of my pregnancy, the bursting of my heart with her arrival, or the new depths to which our family has grown... I hope it expands on this glimpse for women, sisters, daughters, mothers and grandmothers everywhere.⠀ ⠀ Given that Cora was my second breech, #bellybirth baby, I’ve included an offering on “9 Ways to Cultivate a Joyful C-Section,” though I hope many of these will resonate for any birth scenario.⠀ ⠀ I hope my story offers comfort, wisdom, insight, and especially, truth. I thank all the mothers who have shared their stories with me and given me the courage to share mine. 🙏⠀ ⠀ Because in the end, isn’t this glimpse exactly what our journeys to motherhood - each so radically unique and transformative - are all about? Holding these precious beings in our arms and having the privilege to guide them in this world. 💖⠀ ⠀ I’d truly LOVE to hear your reflections, stories, and anything else you’d like to share about birth and motherhood.   • We celebrated the New Year with @dimityps, @nolanchace and their two boys, half siblings to my girls because Dimity and I share the same DNA 👯‍♀️! We wanted to create some kind of ritual to leave behind things that didn’t serve us in 2018, and welcome new dreams and hopes for 2019. We scribbled these on paper (we had two varieties of 🦄’s from the kids) and burned them in the fire. We made up songs with instruments and Ayla suggested we walk in circles around the fire while singing. 🔥🥁⠀ ⠀ It was pouring rain but we didn’t care, because we had hot cocoa with marshmallows and @firelightcamps cider to toast. 🍾⠀ ⠀ It was beautiful, chaotic, meaningful, silly and messy with a few fights over stray marshmallows. ⠀ ⠀ Above all, it felt wonderful to be creating new traditions with our family tribe, with the help of our kiddos. ⠀ ⠀ I’d love to hear what New Year’s traditions or rituals you have in your family! 🎊⠀ ⠀ - - - - ⠀ ⠀ (This hearthstone is real!   • The only thing Ayla wanted for her 3rd birthday was a “piggy cake with blueberries.” 🐷 Thanks to Nonna @fenellapearson, she got one! I got to do the fun part - decorating it! (And shhhh, it’s healthy too, made with protein-rich almond flour and coconut sugar.) I love you my sweet, spirited girl, beyond words. 💝 #kidsbirthdaycake #pigbirthdaycake #piggycake

  • If you’re dreaming of sunnier days to come, @firelightcamps is giving 15% off gift certificates! ⛺️ This past weekend we sparked the campfire once more for a wood stacking party followed by @thepiggery dogs roasted over the fire. We were out well past sundown and it was all the warmth I could dream of during these darkest days as we march towards the solstice!   • Harvesting our “solstice tree / Christmas tree / Hanukkah bush” made me realize that while I can have visions for how to craft our family’s holiday traditions, they will undoubtedly unfold on their own. For example, the idyllic memory I had of cutting down our Christmas tree with my family and standing around a fire pit to warm up with a cup of hot cocoa, was not the experience we had this year as a family. ⠀ ⠀ We arrived at the farm and the grandmotherly farmer came out to give us direction. She noted, wagging a finger vaguely in one direction, “now don’t go near the spruce trees; the needles will scratch you and make your face bleed!”⠀ ⠀ Wuuuuuut. ⠀ ⠀ Ayla was then TERRIFIED of every tree on the farm, and combined with the negative temperatures and two screaming children (during which our @gorumpl jr. puffy blankets SAVED us), our visit was a grand total of 10 minutes without so much as a glance towards the fire pit.⠀ ⠀ When we arrived home, we discovered the tree was too small for the stand, but Bobby found a wonky solution and we hoisted her up! ⠀ ⠀ The next morning Ayla ran up to the tree to pull off her favorite ornament (which she didn’t put up because she was afraid her face would bleed), and the whole tree came toppling down on top of her. Luckily it’s only a foot taller than her.⠀ ⠀ We seized the opportunity to note that, no, her face was not bleeding and in fact, the tree had given her a hug!⠀ ⠀ So there you have it. Ayla’s tree memories will be different than mine no matter what, and the beauty of family tradition is that it can be formed organically over time. The traditions we love will stick! And that may mean we won’t try cutting a tree down next year... 🎄🔥 Pop over to @firelightcamps for fun facts on the true origin of winter evergreens in our home!
  • What an incredible transformation in just 2.5 weeks (see my last post of Ithaca Falls!). Thank you @lifeasastrawberry for making the pilgrimage with me this morning. It’s nearly a black-and-white tundra here with stark shades of grey, and the thrashing, wild falls poured life into my soul. What a gift of wonder to fill the sun’s wintry void. 💙❄️🌊💨 #visitithaca #ithacaisgorges
